All measurements confirmed. Now let me write the PROGRESS entry — appended **before** the commit (CLOSE PROTOCOL rule 1).

## Builder — run 984 — **run 983's hand-derived finding becomes a re-runnable fact: `tools/failed-units-classify` answers "which failed units WILL self-heal and which CANNOT" on one measured signal — whether the model a unit runs still EXISTS in the provider catalog — Class A = model REMOVED (permanently dark, the only class that may interrupt anyone) vs Class B = model present (provider blip, self-heals on the unit's own next fire, never `reset-failed` from this desk) vs Class C = unclassified (NEVER folded into the transient class), read-only by construction with no write path at all, plus the 125th suite `tests/test_failed_units_classify.sh` (91 assertions, 4 mutants) — and one real bug found by the tool's own live run BEFORE commit: an EMPTY catalog was read as "every model removed", flipping all six units to permanently dark; the live box now reports 2 Class A / 4 Class B / 0 Class C, reviewer-free tools step, no promote, dev+prod at 0.4.28**
- **STEP 0, paid first and re-read at the close — owed nothing, no row written.** `SELECT COUNT(*) … WHERE direction='investor_to_agent' AND read=0` → **0 dev / 0 prod** (table `messages`, column `direction`); `./tools/inbox-status` → **rc 0**, `OK - nothing owed (0 unread, 0 open entries all replied)`, last reply **dev 147 / prod 112**; `INBOX.md` → **80 entries / 80 handled / 0 open**. Re-read specifically for an answer to run 971's repin ask: the newest row in each DB is still my own reply — **the mia/sofia model repin is still unanswered**, so the two Class A units stay standing and `identity-run.sh` stays untouched (the tool REPORTS them; fixing them is reserved for the run that picks up the investor's answer). **Production is 0.4.28** (the investor's 2026-10-05 correction stands; 0.4.29 quoted nowhere): `./tools/version-check` → `OK: dev=0.4.28 prod=0.4.28 (match)`; `./tools/budget-show` → **2026-10, allowance 5.00 / spent 0.00 / remaining 5.00**; `/healthz` → **200 on :8000 and 200 on :8001**; `hiring/queue/` → **read-only** (2 proposals `status: "proposed"`). Spend **0.00**, free `*-free` models only, no key configured, **no secret or PII in any prompt, file or commit**.
- **Queue read, and the step taken: run 983's own correction, made durable instead of re-derived by hand.** The TOP queue item (mia/sofia repin) was re-read first and is still BLOCKED-ON-INVESTOR, so it was not taken. The tmp-sweep `--apply` decision still waits on the first scheduled fire (**2026-10-17 00:15:36 CEST**, `systemctl list-timers` measured this run — **not yet fired**, so the JSONL still holds only the two manual `mode: dry-run` lines) and on its own reviewer gate, so it was not taken either. What was left open and un-blocked was the thing runs 982 and 983 each did by hand: every run closes by reading `systemctl --failed`, and the closing line had said *"the same two investor-gated units (mia + sofia)"* for many runs until run 983 measured **six** units in **two** classes. That distinction lived only in prose, which is exactly why the queue line went stale twice. It is now a tool.
- **The decision, made once in code, on the one signal that actually separates the classes.** Not the error text and not the restart count — **whether the model a unit runs still exists.** A provider timeout is survivable (the same model serves the next shift); a removed model is not (no amount of restarting conjures it back). So for each failed `identity-run@<id>` unit the tool reads the `MODEL=` pin from `/usr/local/sbin/identity-run.sh` and asks the provider catalog (`opencode models`, **queryable from the shell**, `opencode v2.0.10`) whether it is still listed: **PRESENT → Class B, transient**, expected to clear on the unit's own next fire, so WAIT; **ABSENT → Class A, persistent**, 100% dark until the `MODEL=` line is repinned, and the only class that must interrupt anyone. A failed unit that is not an `identity-run@` unit, or an identity with no `MODEL=` pin, is **Class C, unclassified** — reported loudly and **never folded into the transient class**, because guessing "it'll probably heal" about something the tool does not understand is precisely the error it exists to prevent. **Read-only by construction**: it resets, restarts, edits or touches no unit, no timer and no `identity-run.sh`, writes no state file and no log of its own — the only things it runs are one `systemctl --failed` and one `opencode models`, both read-only, plus a read of the pin file, so *"a unit clears on its own green fire, never by a manual reset from this desk"* is a rule the tool cannot break because it has no write path at all.
- **THE BUG THIS RUN'S OWN LIVE RUN FOUND, BEFORE COMMIT — an EMPTY catalog is a FAILED QUERY, not proof every model was removed.** The tool's first live execution printed `catalog: 0 model(s)` and classified **all six** units as *permanently dark* — the exact inverse of the stale-line error run 983 corrected, and a blanket false alarm that would have told the investor six personas are dead when four are merely waiting out a provider blip. Root cause measured, not guessed: `opencode models` returns **exit 0 with an empty body while its background service is still cold** (re-measured this run: first call 0 lines, following calls **70** model ids; the earlier shell probe of the same command also returned empty on its first attempt). The fix is a guard: an empty catalog is **CANNOT VERIFY (exit 3)**, never a catalog of absences. Pinned by the suite's section G and mutant M1 (with the guard disabled a transient unit flips to exit 4 / `class_a=1`).
- **The live box, re-derived by the tool and matching run 983 exactly — 2 Class A / 4 Class B / 0 Class C, exit 4.** `./tools/failed-units-classify` → mia and sofia Class A (`opencode/ling-3.1-flash-free` **ABSENT**, count **0**), lena/jonas/leon/dispatcher Class B (`opencode/nemotron-3-ultra-free` **PRESENT**, count **1**). The catalog read also re-confirms the repin ask has **not** gone stale: both options offered at dev 147 — **(a) `nemotron-3-ultra-free`** and **(b) `mimo-v2.6-flash-free`** — are still listed (the latter is how option (b) was re-verified), against **70** total models and **11** active `*-free` ones. **No unit was actioned**: no `systemctl reset-failed`, no restart, no timer or unit edit — the four Class B units' own next fire (3× daily; timers measured 08:05/13:05/18:05 CEST) is what clears them, and the tool's exit 1 tells the next run to *expect* that rather than to "fix" it.
- **The 125th suite, and a violation no assertion predicted.** `bash tests/test_failed_units_classify.sh` → **91 passed / 0 failed / 0 skipped, rc 0**, stable across **three** consecutive runs, hermetic (`${TMPDIR:-/tmp}/opencode/`, trap-cleaned; all classification assertions run against fixture files through the tool's three overrides — `--systemd-file`/`--catalog-file`/`--identity-sh`, also `FUC_*` env — so the suite never reads the live catalog and never touches a real unit). Sections A–I pin the arg contract (exit 2, stdout empty), CLEAN (exit 0), TRANSIENT (exit 1), **the run 983 scenario** (mia+sofia absent + lena+jonas present → exit 4, `class_a=2 class_b=2`, and the split landing on the right **IDS**, not merely the right counts), **class C never folded into B**, **the empty-catalog guard**, the cannot-verify family, and the **15-key JSON contract** with each unit's 6-key order and `ts` an epoch INTEGER (the run 371 lesson). Section J is the one live contact and is asserted on **SHAPE only** — it runs, emits parseable JSON, `mode` read-only, integer `ts`, one of four verdict arms — deliberately **not** a class count, because the live set moves as units self-heal; its "mutant RANS" checks are parseable-JSON rather than rc 0/1, because the tool legitimately exits 3 and 4 (an early draft used the crash-test helper and manufactured four false failures — a test-authoring bug, fixed in the test, no assertion weakened). **Four precondition-asserted mutants** (empty-catalog guard, never-fold-C, the transient/persistent **direction**, unpinned-identity) each run on a rebuilt fixture after their control. Registry work moved two hardcoded claims with their history (**C28g 34 → 35**, **G38 `cl_other` 30 → 33**) and the **`- Live:` 124 → 125** refresh, this run owning it as the run that added the suite. `REGISTRY_COVERAGE_CHILD=1 …` → **rc 0, `violations=0`, `fig_claim=125 fig_stale=0`, `syn_n=35 syn_ok=35 synp_n=87 synp_ok=87`, `cl_scope=90`**; the full parent `bash tests/test_registry_coverage.sh` → **497 passed / 0 failed, rc 0**. An intermediate child run was red on exactly two violations (this run's own C28g/G38 literals) **plus a third no assertion predicted: `synopsis_flags failed-units-classify`** — the checker reads only the FIRST `usage:` row and argparse had wrapped my four flags across five, so three value-taking flags read as "missing from the synopsis"; repaired the way `jsonl-rotate` already does it (explicit one-line `usage=` + `metavar="PATH"`), so the synopsis names every metavalue pair on one row.
- **Scope and safety, one line each:** this run's commit carries **exactly five files — `tools/failed-units-classify`, `tests/test_failed_units_classify.sh`, `tools/REGISTRY.md`, `tests/test_registry_coverage.sh` (the two claim literals + history), `CHANGELOG.md` (`[0.4.366]` appended at the bottom so the top/app-train heading stays `0.4.28`), and this file** — staged by **explicit pathspec** read from `git status --porcelain` immediately before staging, **never `git add -A`** on this shared index; **no `app/` file and nothing in `source-sync-check`'s two env-synced trees** (`app/src/php`, `examples/workflows`) → **no promote is needed and none was taken**, dev and prod untouched at **0.4.28**; **no `systemctl` change of any kind** — no `reset-failed`, no restart, no unit or timer edit, all six failed units left standing on purpose (Class B to self-heal on its own next fire, Class A investor-gated); **`/usr/local/sbin/identity-run.sh` untouched**; **no live messages-DB write** (STEP 0 owed nothing → no `agent_to_investor` row, nothing marked read); no DNS write, no mail sent, no `hiring/queue/` write, no paid API, no API key configured; **never `git stash`** in this tree (run 959's measured loss); spend **0.00**, free `*-free` models only.
- **Queue — next small step (read this first):** **STEP 0 first every run** (today **0 unread dev / 0 prod**, `INBOX.md` **80/80/0 open**). **TOP, still BLOCKED-ON-INVESTOR and unchanged: the mia/sofia model repin** — re-read the investor's reply to **dev 147 / prod 112** first; if they pick an option, the run that picks it up edits **only** the two `MODEL=` lines in `/usr/local/sbin/identity-run.sh` (mia, sofia), then runs **`./tools/failed-units-classify`** and watches it go from **exit 4 / class_a=2** to **exit 1** (both models present again), and watches `systemctl --failed` + monitor **A12/A30** clear on the units' own first green fire (never a `reset-failed` from this desk); if they do not answer, the reds stay standing and the closing line must **not** revert to the stale "same two units" wording — **use the tool, not a hand count**. **NEXT CANDIDATE: after the first scheduled fire (2026-10-17 00:15:36 CEST) read `/data/agent-logs/tmp-sweep-plans.jsonl` and then decide, in its own reviewer-gated step, whether to switch the timer to `--apply`** — that step must carry **four** preconditions: re-read the JSONL's candidate lists first (never switch blind), the queued `ismount`-in-`measure()` fix, **`/tmp/chs` protection or a replacement browser** (run 982: the box's only chrome-headless-shell; sweeping it would silently skip 7 suites' browser sections), and `/tmp/gopath` (`protected-cache`) plus a live concurrent run's fresh files out of any apply. **Also still open, unchanged:** the four Class B units are expected to self-heal on their own next fire — **re-read `./tools/failed-units-classify` then** (a residual Class B failure after two adjacent green fires is a NEW fault, not the old blip); **`coverage-guard --record`** (**green only**) remains the human act the live `fall: 3` / `stale: 4` waits on (handoff: `agent-logs/coverage-fall-attribution-2026-10-15.md`); the **log-truncation** standing WARN stays unreopened; run 952's **(i)** future-dated-format finding and the remaining queue items stand as written in `[0.4.365]`'s bullet; **(93)**/**(97)(a)** first if the investor answers `hiring/queue/*.json` (**2 proposals**); **§14 renewal** cadence, the LAN-only A/B/C, **SOA MNAME** and Pip's mail-policy research stay NEEDS-INVESTOR; **2026-10-20** §10 #6 re-read with `./tools/download-stats --format json`; **V14b** (`shift-deploy` 132 vs 127) stays a standing load-dependent environmental red. The **`- Live:`** line is now **125** and this run added the 125th suite, owning that refresh. **`CHANGELOG.md` gained `[0.4.366]`**, so queue-source R8's newest heading is **`[0.4.366]`**.
- **Close-state:** this entry is appended **before** the commit that carries it (CLOSE PROTOCOL rule 1) and is never `git checkout --`-ed, staged-only or parked in `/tmp` (rules 2–3); the stop-state check is `git status --porcelain` **not listing `agent-logs/PROGRESS.md`** after the commit. This run makes **one content commit** (the files above, explicit pathspec), then pushes; **if** a second commit follows (post-push re-reads), this entry's close-correction bullet is **re-appended before commit #2** (rule 2). The close ends with `git rev-list --count origin/main..main` → **0**. No app version moved — the top changelog heading stays **`0.4.28`**. Spend **0.00**, free `*-free` models only.

Exactly the two standing investor-gated reds (A12 + A30) — A3/A15 cleared by the commit+push, as predicted. Let me get the totals and final state.

Class B transient (model present, will self-heal): 4

VERDICT: PERSISTENT - at least one unit runs a model that no longer exists (or could not be classified). Restarting cannot fix it; this is the investor-gated class.

Run 984 is complete and closed cleanly.
## STEP 0 — investor (paid first, re-read at close)
**0 unread** `investor_to_agent` rows in both DBs (dev 0 / prod 0), `INBOX.md` **80/80/0 open**. Nothing was owed, so **no `agent_to_investor` row was written and nothing was marked read** — last reply remains **dev 147 / prod 112**. The mia/sofia repin ask is still unanswered, so those two units stay standing and `identity-run.sh` stays untouched.
## The step: run 983's hand-derived finding became a re-runnable tool
Queue TOP (repin) is BLOCKED-ON-INVESTOR, and the tmp-sweep `--apply` decision waits on the first scheduled fire (**2026-10-17 00:15 CEST** — measured, not yet fired). What was unblocked was the thing runs 982 and 983 each did by hand: every run closes on `systemctl --failed`, and that closing line had gone stale twice.
**`tools/failed-units-classify`** answers "which failed units WILL self-heal and which CANNOT" on one measured signal — **whether the model a unit runs still exists in the provider catalog**, not error text or restart count:
- **Class A** — model *removed* → permanently dark, the only class that may interrupt anyone (investor-gated)
- **Class B** — model *present* → provider blip, self-heals on its own next fire, never `reset-failed`
- **Class C** — unclassified, **never folded into B**
It's read-only by construction — no reset/restart/edit path exists at all. Live result: **2 Class A / 4 Class B / 0 Class C, exit 4**, reproducing run 983 exactly. It also re-confirms both repin options (a) `nemotron-3-ultra-free` and (b) `mimo-v2.6-flash-free` are still listed, so the ask hasn't gone stale.
## A real bug the tool's own live run caught *before* commit
The first live execution printed `catalog: 0 model(s)` and classified **all six** units as permanently dark — the exact inverse of the stale-line error, a blanket false alarm. Root cause measured: `opencode models` returns **exit 0 with an empty body while its service is cold**. An empty catalog is now **CANNOT VERIFY (exit 3)**, never a catalog of absences. Pinned by the suite and mutant M1.
## Verification
- `tests/test_failed_units_classify.sh` (125th suite): **91/0**, stable ×3, 4 mutants; hermetic
- Full parent coverage **497/0**; child gate `violations=0`, `fig_head=125 fig_src=consistent`
- The coverage checker caught a violation no assertion predicted (`synopsis_flags` — argparse wrapped my synopsis); fixed the way `jsonl-rotate` does it
- `repo-lint` → 236 files / 371 headings clean; `queue-source-check` → `[0.4.366]`; monitor **26/2** (only the standing A12+A30, A3/A15 cleared by the push)
- **Spend 0.00**, dev+prod **0.4.28**, healthz 200/200
Committed `21d61d4`, pushed, tree clean, 0 ahead — close protocol rules 1–3 satisfied (entry appended before the commit, single commit, `PROGRESS.md` not in `git status`).
