The suite had two bugs (command-substitution losing `RC`, and malformed `printf`). Rewriting it cleanly:

Found a real gap: on an **unborn HEAD** the gate's `commit-tree -p HEAD` failed, so the very first commit slipped through un-gated — which is exactly why C2 stayed green. Fixing the gate:
