## [0.4.156] - 2026-10-01 — queue item (104): the `wait` class reaches its neighbours — `|`/`&` as start characters, `&` as a terminator, and the subshell rule that stops the widening buying a false positive — with the five documented sets a rate-limited run had left red

### Changed — one suite's two readers, its plants, and the control expectations that document them; no tool code

- **(104) closed, and the split of the work written down rather than papered over.** The readers and the plants landed in `a726d49` (run 436, the same loop) and that run was cut off by the free-model rate limit **after** the suite came back **133 passed / 5 failed** — runs 437–460 then each failed at the first token (`Rate limit exceeded`, 153-byte logs), so the tree sat red for ≈ 4 h with five `Kn c` expectations still carrying their pre-(104) sets. This run reconciled them to measurement: the code was not touched to make the reds go away, the **documented sets** were rewritten to the reds the mutations actually produce, each with its derivation in the control's own comment.
- **The class itself** (`tests/test_detached_children.sh`, both A-section readers): `(^|[; \t])wait([ \t;|]|$)` → **`(^|[; \t|&])wait([ \t;|&]|$)`** — `true&&wait`, `true|wait` and `wait&&echo done` are waits, and `wait&&echo done` now has a terminator that matches at all — with the tail handing `&` back the way it hands back `;` and `|`, and the argument list's operator cut taking `&` into its class for the same reason.
- **The subshell rule, which is what keeps that widening honest.** Measured on real processes: `true&&wait` blocks for the whole child, while `true|wait` and `wait | true` return in ~0.01 s and leave it alive — bash runs a pipeline's `wait` in a subshell with an empty job table. The pairing therefore covers nothing when the `|` sits at the end of the match's head or when the operator cut read `op == "|"`, and **A39 is a false positive this step closes**: `true | wait` already matched the pre-(104) class and read as waited.
- **Plants A33–A40, fixtures f5/f6, live pairs B21–B26, controls K16/K17.** K16 puts both readers back on the pre-(104) class → **6 red (`A33 A34 A35 A36 A37 B21`)**; K17 deletes the subshell rule → **4 red (`A38 A39 A40 B24`)**; K5's untouched copy → **0 red / 70**.
- **The five reconciliations, each explained where it lives**: `K6c` → **9 red** (`A15 A27 A28 A29 A38 A39 A40 B14 B24` — last-vs-last asks only whether a WAIT record follows the last `&`, and a pipeline's wait prints one); `K7c` → **3 red** (`A16 A32 A37` — A37 is the third instance of "a bare wait over three children", this one closed by `&&`); `K10c` → **9 red** (`A26 A27 A32 A37 A38 A39 A40 B14 B24` — the counting reader never had the operator cut *or* the subshell rule); `K13c` → **3 red** (`A29 A37 A40` — the cut is also what sets `op`, i.e. what flags a left-hand subshell wait); `K15c` → **1 red (`A32`)**, *down* from the set run 436 wrote (`A32 A37`): with the `&` eaten, the operator cut fires on the leading `&` and empties the list exactly as the hand-back did, so **A37 does not redden there**.
- **The comment that claim rested on is corrected in the same commit.** The reader credited the `&` hand-back with A37 (*"the token loop below would otherwise read as one argument"*) — the token loop drops `&` tokens anyway and the operator cut fires first, so no measured shape reddens the `&` half of the class. The comment now says so and the open question (drop `&` from the class, or make it load-bearing) is queued as **(107)** rather than settled here.
- **`tools/REGISTRY.md`, written only inside `## test_detached_children.sh`**: the `Exit codes` bullet (**116 → 138**), the headline (**138 assertions, A 41, B 26, C 3, K 68**, runtime ≈ 4 m 6 s, child **70**, 17 controls), the **A (33) → A (41)** and **B (20) → B (26)** bullets with the (104) plants named, the **K (60) → K (68)** bullet (seventeen controls, `passed + failed == 70`, K5 **0 red / 70**), a new dated re-measurement bullet for the five moved rows plus K16/K17, and a **Since `[0.4.156]`** paragraph. No executed tool under `tools/` was edited, so the tool census is unchanged (**22 tools, 31 registered sections**) and the `- Live:` suite figure on `## regression-run` is untouched (**75**, measured 2026-10-01).

### Verified — measured on this tree, three runs

- **Pre-reconciliation shipped tree** (`09575e9`): `bash tests/test_detached_children.sh` → **133 passed, 5 failed**, the five reds exactly `K6c K7c K10c K13c K15c` — every one a *"reds are EXACTLY the documented set"* assertion, **no A/B/C assertion red**, i.e. a documentation mismatch and not a reader defect.
- **Post-reconciliation, same tree + this step**: **138 passed, 0 failed (4 m 6 s)**, section by section **A 41, B 26, C 3, K 68** (41 + 26 + 3 + 68 = 138), a repeat run of the same tree → **138 passed, 0 failed** again.
- **Nothing was loosened to get there**: no assertion was removed, renamed or weakened; one expectation string moved *down* by one plant (`K15c`, with the derivation above), four moved *up*, and every child suite still reports `passed + failed == 70` (`Kn b`).

### Notes

- No `app/src/php` edit → **no reviewer gate and no promote** (prod untouched); no service restarted; **zero DNS writes**; **no mail sent**; model spend **0.00** (free `*-free` models only). Control copies live under the suite's own `$SB/ctl/` and are removed by its `trap`; nothing under `tests/` or `tools/` was mutated to reach these numbers.

### Queue -> agent-logs/PROGRESS.md
Authoritative next-candidate queue lives in `agent-logs/PROGRESS.md`, in the `Next-candidate queued, not actioned` bullet of the newest run entry — it is not duplicated here, and has not been since `[0.4.67]`. To read the live queue, open `PROGRESS.md`; to know whether that is still true, run `tools/queue-source-check`.
